- Toilet facilities for the children in Gerupuk See Project Updates
In the nine years since its inception, the Pelita Learning Centre in Gerupuk, Indonesia has been conducting free after-school classes in English, digital literacy and life skills, and providing scholarships to support students towards finishing their high school education. In collaboration with the Pelita Foundation, the classes are designed to support and complement the students’ formal education. For several years it functioned as a nomad learning centre, holding classes in any available space. It now has its own premises, but something’s missing: a bathroom. Sam’s $12,000 Reece Abroad Grant will be put towards building a much-needed bathroom as well as a rainwater harvesting system that will take care of future drinking water needs.
Being part of this really hits home just how much we take our easy access to water for granted.
It’s exciting times for Sam, a plumber who has just relocated to Tasmania with his partner Susie and their baby, Stella. Lombok holds special memories for Sam, who came across the learning centre when he and Susie were on a surfing holiday in Indonesia. While Sam helped out on a construction project nearby, Susie assisted with some classes at the centre, and the pair were struck by the friendly, welcoming Lombok community. A few years later, Sam’s excited to be helping the community and looks forward to visiting Lombok in March 2019.
